The people who criticize this recording either only listened to the first song or two, or don't know what an audience recording is. The latter half of the set sounds terrific, and is probably the best performance of this period. China-Rider and Music Never Stopped are incredible...which sets you up for one of the most awesome second sets of the late 70's.

Yo ryenoceros, I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! This is the best tape I ever owned. Granted it was the 2nd set, whick looks like it is not availible to stream. Scarlet>Fire is unreal, and the transition between Esti>Eyes is pure bliss. Jerry must have had a delivery from Columbia that night....WOW

Subject: Smokin' Set, Same Old Source
IT's too bad there isn't a better source for this show, since it's the apparently the same one used for 99% of the tapes circulating in the early 80's. That having been said, THANK YOU for posting this show. IMO, the most underappreciated show. Ever. OOOOOOH, the Band was "listless" in '78-79. Gimme a break. Listen to China/Rider ROCK, and the definitive Music Never Stopped (and those are in the first set!) Jerry is smokin' throughout. Yeah, the sound quality could be (a lot) better. But I'll take what I can get. I don't even own a cassette player any more, and my tape was worn out anyway. Thanks again for posting it.

This is one of my favorite dead tapes I've ever owned.
It is a stunning display of Jerry Garcias capabilities as a lead guitar player. The transitions between songs on this date are very different from other shows and they are in some cases extremely high energy.
I gotta run to have about 2,3, 79 beers!

While there are, as noted, worse audience recordings on this site, I don't think I'd go so far as to say the sound quality here is "remarkably good." Between the PA problems and the spottiness the source it's really difficult how well the band is playing, though things do get better as the show moves along. Generally speaking (yeah, yeah, I know there are some exceptions), late '78/early '79 was not a strong period for the Grateful Dead, and even the better shows from around that time have a sort of forced, "tryin' real hard, here, folks" quality to them. Hard to believe this is the same band that was just tearin' it up all through 1977 and very early '78- where's the energy gone? China>Rider enthusiasts may want this for the breakout of that combo, but for most collectors I'm guessing this one will fall into the "play once or twice and put away for good" category.

I have only listened to the second set of this show but, the Scarlet in on the money. Jerry and the boys really dig into this version and it seems to catapult them further into the rest of the set. The sound quality is remarkably good. There are a few spots of aud noise but , if you can take that the performance greatly makes up for any loss in fid.

...Yeah, sound starts a little rough, but that's more a function of the PA than anything else. And the last three songs are of nearly the same quality as the second set (it's in fact the same source but this set has a few cassette gens on it). I'm a little surprised at the slagging this set is getting, there are a lot worse AUDs on archive.org and from more recent shows as well.
Okay, the first few songs are a little rough but things to take off mid-set and The Music Never Stopped is one of the best.

This source must be the one for my tape that I got almost twenty years ago, as I can hear all the exact same banter from the crowd here as I do on my tape. The rare late 70's China>Rider is worth a listen, but don't waste a CD or hard drive space on this recording...

Sure, the music is fantastic, but I can barely listen to this recording! The first track-and-a-half are absolutely terrible. There is noticable improvement by the 3rd track, but the recording is not a good one. This recording is hardly worth downloading and archiving. I will search for a better one.
